  • Enhance professional development.
  • Recognise and celebrate achievements.
  • Identify any areas of weakness.
  • Set targets.

Appraisal Procedure

Ensure that each Teaching Assistant understands that a professional review of their work is required and that it is a formal or informal opportunity for Teaching Assistants to discuss their performance and professional needs with their line manager. It is necessary to emphasis that a review is a dialogue where they can give their opinions freely and raise problems or concerns about the way their job is developing.

Self-Review

A self-review should be an honest appraisal of Your strengths and weaknesses in performance

  • Working with pupils
  • Curriculum understanding
  • Behaviour Management
  • Relationships with other adults in or connected with school

What extra contributions you have made to school life.

What appreciation and critical comments you received from others.

Your thoughts for the future, with reference to development opportunities and training whether in or out of school.

Self - review will help identify any training needs, it is used more since the role of the TA has developed. Since the introduction to PPA and HLTA. Many tools are used here is an example of one I am just about to put into my schools to help Head Teachers identify which of the HLTA Standards they are meeting.
From here the Head can then decide what needs to be done for the TA to meet all the standards. Or it can be used just to develop a picture of where the TAs are at

When collating evidence
Many courses Teaching Assistants attend they don't receive any accreditation or certificates of attendance.

If you use the attached form you can ask any tutor to summaries the course, date and sign. This will then be a piece of evidence to prove you have completed some particular training.
